Women’s Heart Health – Prevention, Detection and Treatment

AAUW Petaluma will partner with the Petaluma Health Care District to call attention to an important health issue. A free panel discussion open to the public on women’s heart health will take place:

Monday February 6th (NEW DATE)
7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Sheraton Hotel in the marina in Petaluma, 745 Baywood Dr.(NEW LOCATION)

Tentatively scheduled for the panel are Najine Shariat, clinical dietitian/nutritionist, Dr. Nurit Licht, family physician, Dr. Ken Lehrman, cardiologist, and Battalion Chief Dan Epperson, Petaluma Fire Department.

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases takes a disproportionate toll on women, claiming nearly 420,000 lives a year, more than the next three leading causes of death combined. Nearly 50% of women don’t know that heart disease is their #1 killer and are still unaware of their own risk factors.

Some questions that will be addressed are:

                           • Is it preventable?                 • What are the warning signs or indicators of problems?
  • Is it hereditary?   • How is it diagnosed?
  • Are there at risk groups?   • When should tests start and how often should they be done?
  • Is age a factor?   • What kind of treatment options exist?
  • Is weight a factor?   • What are the risk factors with medications?
  • Is estrogen level a factor?
  • Impact of diet and exercise?
  • Impact of alcohol & tobacco use?

Heart attack is a life-and-death emergency — every second counts. Come learn how to protect yourself and those you love. Bring anyone you care about!

Featuring Camilla Grey Nelson – Dog trainer, business woman and author

The annual “Tri Branch Brunch” with the Marin and Novato branches is always a delightful way to get together with our sister branches in Marin County. The speaker will provide a novel look at communication and the brunch is always tasty. Bring a guest!

Twenty years ago, Camilla Grey Nelson got the idea to convert her barn into a board and train facility, and the Dairydell Doggie Dude Ranch was born. Petaluma native Nelson’s original life plan was quite different. She received her masters in public administration and thought she’d have a career with the government. Then she got laid off and eventually retooled the former family dairy farm.

As an obedience trainer, Nelson understood the importance of good dog behavior. And she knew that the success of her breeding business would increase exponentially if her puppies were properly trained. She began including a free four-week training course with each sale and started getting calls from people asking how much she charged for dog training. One thing Nelson observed was that in nearly 80 percent of all households, the woman is responsible for taking care of the dog.

Her life-long understanding of the animal mind helped her develop what has become her signature style of natural dog training and voice control, now simply referred to as the “Dairydell Method”. Camilla and her Dairydell Method have been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles, as well as on San Francisco TV’s Evening Magazine and View From the Bay. Camilla loves teaching – whether dogs, their owners, or the horses you see her riding in Dairydell’s beautiful arena. When she’s not training, teaching or riding, Camilla is writing about her favorite subject: dogs and their people! We’ve asked her to bring copies of her book “Lipstick and the Leash – Dog Training a Woman’s Way.”

“By revealing the secrets of quiet power and influence in the animal world, I help my clients - most of them women - gain greater control not only with their dogs, but in their personal lives as well. Power in nature is neither loud nor confrontational. On the contrary, it is quiet, consistent and focused.”
