From  the Presidents
T
he end of the Branch year is rapidly approaching and what
a busy year it has been. Our most recent major
achievement was serving as the host branch for the AAUW
California State convention, in Rohnert Park. What an
amazing, inspiring event.
Forty-five
Branch members contributed time and energy to
making the weekend go smoothly for the 300+ attendees. An
‘extra’ offering for convention-goers was a tour of historic
Petaluma led by three costumed docents. Mayor Pam Torliatt
welcomed the 40 visitors. Thanks to Esther Schau for
arranging this special event.
The Branch had twelve members registered for convention,
including Sue Cochran and Charlotte Pedersen, Branch
members who are also Past State Presidents.  We will be
creating a special section on our web site for all attendees to
share their experiences, and each of our seven delegates will write a
newsletter article about which part of the weekend meant the most to each of
them.
One of our newest Branch members, Helen Grieco, was a panelist at the
Saturday morning Plenary session which addressed “Achieving Equity
Through Advocacy.” Helen is Executive Director of CA-NOW, and will be our
Branch Public Policy chair this next year. It’s not often we get to meet a new
Branch member for the first time at a State convention. Welcome, Helen.
All convention sessions and activities were designed around three basic
concepts:
-
Our Vision Statement is our roadmap. AAUW will be a powerful advocate and
visible leader in equity and education through research, philanthropy and
measurable change in critical areas impacting the lives of women and girls.
-
Our Mission Statement empowers us. AAUW advances equity for women and
girls through advocacy, education and research; and
-
Our new Value Promise is a critical piece that’s never been articulated
and expresses the spirit of AAUW that brings together women all across
our country, unifying us and all we do for women and girls. By joining
AAUW, you belong to a community that breaks through educational and
economic barriers so all women have a fair chance.
A very special thanks to Tiffany Renee, the Local Arrangements Chair. Being
Co-President of the Branch this next year should be a “piece of cake” after that
assignment. We promised Tiff when she took the convention job that the
branch women would turn out in large numbers to help……and you did. Thank
you!
