Butter and Eggs Day benefits from new
Alcohol-Related Nuisance Ordinance (ARNO)
Outdoor alcohol sales at Petaluma's Butter and
Egg Day Parade were concentrated in two "beer
gardens" instead of in multiple scattered, less
closely regulated stands. Downtown merchants
reported pleasant, well-behaved crowds.
Petaluma AAUW is one of the many local groups
that has lent its support to the Coalition to Prevent
Underage and High-Risk Drinking, a key backer of
ARNO. It appears this ordinance has helped to en-
courage a family-friendly downtown atmosphere on
Butter and Egg Day, while simultaneously creating
conditions that are favorable for downtown mer-
chants and restaurants—a positive outcome.
AAUW California’s 2008 Bill Package now
posted on the state website
Every year, the state AAUW Public Policy Commit-
tee studies proposed California legislation and
makes a list of bills to support and oppose, based
on the Action Priorities that are established by the
general membership vote every two years. The bill
package for the 2008 legislative session is now
ready and can be viewed on the state website,
www.aauw-ca.org. On the left side of aauw-ca’s
home page, click on “Public Policy” and follow the

In May, AAUW released its analysis on trends by
gender, race/ethnicity, and income in education.
Where The Girls Are: The Facts About Gender
Equity in Education shows that girls and boys from
4th grade through the end of college are making
steady educational gains.  An analysis of all 50
states shows that girls are not succeeding at the
expense of boys, and in fact, family income is more
closely associated with academics than gender.
