The Perspective - Page 3
Welcome to our newest members
D
eanna Statler moved to Petaluma last
summer after retiring from state govern-
ment work in Illinois.  She is enjoying
being near her daughter and new grand-
son in San Francisco.  Deanna bought her house,
sight-unseen, and loves it.  She was inspired to
move to California both by the urgings of her
daughter, and a rather magical day during a visit
when an omelet had 6 double-yoked eggs, fol-
lowed by a perfect double-rainbow from horizon to
horizon on the trip to Cambria, topped off by the
sighting of three zebras at Hearst Castle.  Califor-
nia has definitely turned out to be a place that suits
her.  She chose Petaluma because of its weather
and its greenbelt and approach to growth.  Some-
how she doesn't miss the cold winters or the hot
summers of Illinois.  Deanna is really enjoying the
classes at the Osher LLI at Sonoma State Univer-
sity.  She has enjoyed hiking and walking in the
past and wants to get back into those activities.
And, it sounds like you could interest her in a
movie and a discussion of same.
H
elen Grieco has been in Petaluma for
about two years, after spending 17 years
in San Francisco.  She originally is from
New York, and has been in a number of
spots around California prior to San Francisco.
Helen is the executive director of  the California
National Organization for Women, a position she
has held since 2001.  She has been involved with
CA-NOW for 25 years.  Helen chose Petaluma be-
cause it is the "best place" to raise a child, and she
has a young daughter.  Helen is also involved in
teaching women about safety, self-defense,  eco-
nomic independence, and maintaining healthier
lifestyles.   Expect to find Helen involved in city
government, the PTA, and within AAUW where she
has stepped up to be the public policy chair for the
branch.  Helen is interested in the book group, and
was a speaker at the State Convention in April in
Rohnert Park.

F
ive Petaluma girls who are entering the eighth grade will be attending AAUW’s Tech Trek at
Stanford University this summer.  The girls were nominated by their teachers and interviewed
by a group of AAUW volunteers. The cost per camper is $850.  The bulk of that cost ($800) is
paid for by our branch fundraising efforts;  the remainder is paid for by the camper and her fam-
ily. Tech Trek 2007 drew 620 campers statewide to six campuses: Stanford University, Mills College,
CSU Fresno, Whittier, UC-San Diego, and UC-Santa Barbara.
Petaluma branch is also sending members to Mills Tech Trek:  Sheila Garvey and Rory Keller, co-
directors; Paula Cornyn, Doris Tolks and Allison Kendall, dorm moms; Debbie Daunt, Pat Riley, Laura
Tanner, Patti Pritchard, Sylvia Wake-Hood, and Sharon Johnson, as professional women's evening par-
ticipants. For more details on Tech Trek, be sure to attend our Fall Membership Tea in September.
