P
Local Psychologist to speak about steroids in sports
D
enise Garibaldi, Ph.D., a licensed clinical
psychologist in private practice in Peta-
luma, will address the subject of Steroid
Use in Sports at our next meeting on
Wednesday, October 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the
Petaluma Womans Club at 518 B Street.
A graduate of the Pacific Graduate School of Psy-
chology, Dr. Garibaldi approaches the effect of
substance use on individuals and on one family
from a personal as well as a professional perspec-
tive. Dr. Garibaldi notes that although steroid and
performance-enhancing substances/supplements
use by professional athletes has captured the col-
lective unconscious, 1 in 16 high school stu-
dents, including girls,
feel the pressure for com-
petitive advantage, appearance, and self-image
and report using.
She and her husband have gained local and na-
tional recognition for their work in raising aware-
ness regarding the physical and mental effects of
steroid use by athletes. She has testified before
Congress along with Mark McGuire and Sammy
Sousa, has appeared on national television, and
has granted interviews to national and local news
services including the Press Democrat and the San
Francisco Chronicle.
Dr. Garibaldi wrote The Challenge and the Trag-
edy published in the New England Law Review.
Her familys saga, which evolved as the BALCO
story unfolded, occupies a portion of the controver-
sial book, Game of Shadows.
This presentation is a must for health care pro-
fessionals, coaches, parents, athletes, and others
who need to know more about how steroids affect
those who use them and how tragedy might be
avoided. Those interested in steroid bans can also
review options for action.
