From  the Presidents
R
ecently we attended the New and Prospec-
tive Members’ section, hosted by Doris
Tolks and Joanne Garvey. It was fun and infor-
mative and we enjoyed getting to better know
five women who’ve recently joined our branch.
Those of us who’ve been around a while repeated, “join a section”, “join a
section”, “join a section”, as a mantra of how to get the ‘best and most’ out
of membership. While we firmly believe this, it brings up a troubling ‘secret’
of some sections. There are Branch Sections who allow ongoing attendance
by folks who’ve not paid their dues.
This is NOT ok. We know it’s hard for some of you ‘section heads’ to ‘get
tough’ but it is not unreasonable to enforce our Branch bylaws.  $81/year is
a very modest price for belonging to a National, State, and Branch organiza-
tion with the dynamite vision and mission of AAUW. And, as a reminder, in
Couples Bridge, or Gourmet dining, or Wine Tasting, etc., only one member
of the couple needs to belong, so in the case of husband/wife teams, we’re
not asking for a “double” membership. And it can be either the woman or the
man!
Not requiring dues-paying membership in a Section sets a terrible example
for new and prospective new members. Our membership committee will be
working with Patty Shribbs, Section Chair, over the next few months to en-
sure that all section members are fully enrolled. Your cheerful respect and
cooperation are much appreciated.

ticipation in the AAUW-CA State Convention, April 4 -
6, 2008, at the
